Skincare routines get all the attention, but the skin below your jawline follows the same rules: cleanse gently, hydrate generously, and seal it all in. Body-care layering is about order and timing — the same products applied in the wrong sequence simply don’t work as well.
Step one: wash, don’t strip
Swap harsh, high-foam gels for a cream or oil-based wash, especially in colder months. Shower oils clean effectively while depositing a light protective film. Keep water warm rather than hot; a ten-minute scalding shower undoes more hydration than any body butter can restore.
Step two: exfoliate — but only twice a week
Chemical exfoliants have made their way from face to body for good reason. A lotion or wash with lactic acid or urea smooths rough arms and legs far more evenly than a scrub. Twice a week is plenty; daily exfoliation leads to the tight, itchy feeling people mistake for cleanliness.
Step three: the golden three minutes
The single most effective change you can make costs nothing: apply your moisturiser within three minutes of stepping out of the shower. Damp skin drinks in humectants and traps that water under the cream. Pat yourself half-dry with a towel, then apply lotion while your skin is still dewy. The difference by evening is visible.
Step four: layer by texture
The rule is thinnest to thickest. If you use a hydrating body serum or milk, it goes first. Lotion or cream follows. On very dry areas — shins, elbows, heels — finish with a balm or a few drops of body oil pressed on top to seal everything in. In summer you might stop after the lotion; in winter the final occlusive layer earns its keep.
Don’t forget the extremities
Hands and feet lose moisture fastest and get washed most often. Keep a hand cream wherever you actually sit — desk, car, bedside — because location beats willpower. Once a week, apply a thick layer of cream to feet before bed and sleep in cotton socks. Necks and chests age visibly too: whatever SPF goes on your face in the morning should travel south as far as your neckline.
A routine you’ll actually keep
The full ritual takes under five minutes. Oil-wash daily, exfoliate twice weekly, moisturise on damp skin every single time, and seal the dry spots. Skip the twelve-product body routines — consistency with four steps beats novelty with twelve.
